The literature review is a significant step in the research process. The researcher is permitted to construct the whole picture of what is and what has been going on in a certain area of research and to add to the knowledge that has been there before. The literature review requires an in-depth analysis of writings (books, articles, & journal articles) in order to arrive at the most important concepts that can be related to the question posed in the research.
Finding a research area that has not been explored yet is another main factor that is identified through a literature review process. The researcher is more likely to spot a gap since he/she will have gone through the previous research done in that area and thus will have pointed out any gaps in research. Hence, this gives a ground for researchers to claim that their research is new and original. Besides giving a new and original ground for research, the literature review will also help in clarifying the research question and the theoretical framework associated with it.
Moreover, literature review also gives the researcher more credit in the eyes of others regarding his/her research project. With the literature review, the researcher is shown to be someone who has done a thorough literature study of the area of investigation before coming up with the research design. Besides, the literature review is an excellent source of information on which methods or methodologies have been successful in doing related research in the past and are, therefore, the best to be used.
