One of Asia’s most popular summer research programs for undergraduate students is the Amgen Scholar Program at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H). While many people think of Amgen Scholars as just another scholarship opportunity, the program provides an internship-like experience that enables participants to integrate their academic studies with hands-on experience conducting cutting-edge research in various fields.
This competitive research program consists of approximately eight weeks of research during the months of June through August, where selected participants will engage in meaningful research experiences to access valuable insight and hands-on experience while working with established professors at IIIT Hyderabad. Research areas include, but not limited to, artificial intelligence, machine learning and computational biology.
Another great benefit of the Amgen Scholars program is the $2000 stipend, along with free housing and travel insurance. Participants will enjoy a round-trip flight to Hyderabad and a free tour abroad to the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium, usually held in a city like Tokyo. This international setting provides students an opportunity to interact with one another and scientists of different cultural backgrounds, increasing collaboration and widening their views.
Selection criteria for admission into the program is generally flexible and rigorous. Candidates to the program must be undergraduate students attending one of several universities throughout Asia and must have been attending their school for at least one year. The program accepts applications from all academic disciplines, however, a solid background in math and participation in research-related courses are critical. Candidates should also be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently, and standardized test scores like TOEFL or IELTS may be required.
Applying to the program requires thorough preparation and intense scrutiny of each applicant. Candidates must submit a quality resume, an official copy of transcripts, and a compelling statement of purpose (SOP). The SOP is important because it helps demonstrate the passion for research and future goals.
In addition, two letters of recommendation must be submitted with an application. The program accepts only ten students each year; thus, it is very selective. Having a high GPA is necessary, but has little bearing on how competitive the applicant will be without establishing a true interest in research and contributions to research in the future. The more experience you have with coding, analyzing data, and other research-related activities, the more competitive your application will be.
To summarize, If you want to pursue a career in research and education, the Amgen Scholars Program within IIIT Hyderabad provides an excellent opportunity. This program does offer financial support, as well as an opportunity to receive mentorship support and an opportunity to travel internationally. The Amgen Scholars Program will benefit any student who aspires to impact their chosen field.
